One-week Neonatal Nutrition Update Practicum
As part of the Neonatal Nutrition Training Program at Baylor College of Medicine, One-week Neonatal Nutrition Update Practicums are offered for nutritionists who work with low birth weight and premature infants.
This program is supported in part by the Federal Maternal and Child Health Bureau, Health Resources and Services Administration.
Purpose and Content ^
This program reviews the basics in nutritional support of low birth weight and premature infants. Such topics as neonatal classification, breastfeeding, neonatal nutrient requirements, nutritional assessment, and dilemmas in enteral and parenteral nutrition for premature infants are emphasized. Discussion among neonatologists and nutritionists is primarily informal. The course pivots around practical experience with premature neonates in the neonatal intensive care unit. This program serves as a time to compare and contrast the nutritional practices for rapidly growing infants in the hospital and to discuss and plan for infants' discharge into the home setting. See the sample schedule.

These programs are designed for nutritionists employed within a neonatal intensive care unit. Enrollment is limited to four nutritionists per session to facilitate participant interaction and to maximize the practicum's effectiveness.
