Ph.D.
The Section of Neonatology offers a unique extended fellowship program in partnership with the Department of Molecular & Cellular Biology through the College’s Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. This approach to research training is available for fellows who are focused on pursuing a career in bench-based research in academic neonatology.
During this four- to five-year program, fellows receive postdoctoral training in neonatal-perinatal medicine that leads to sub-board eligibility and certification. In addition, fellows complete course work and research projects that fulfill the requirements necessary for the conferment of a Ph.D. in Cell Biology.
The second year of the Ph.D. program is completely devoted to a sequence of courses that cover the principles and techniques in cellular, structural, and molecular biology, and the fellow selects a thesis advisor. During the next two to three years, research on an original project is completed and is the basis for defense of the candidate’s dissertation.

The BCM Section of Neonatology, together with the University of Texas School of Public Health, offers the training necessary to obtain a master of public health degree.
